Black History Month employee spotlight: Kimani West

At Abstract, we’re lucky to be celebrating this month by shouting out some dope teammates who are helping create Black History in the tech industry today. Check out part of what makes Recruiter Kimani West special.

What personal passions bring you to Abstract?

Helping others—whether candidates or hiring managers—reach their goals, and celebrating those wins; that’s what drives me! I enjoy lifting up those around me through friendship, consideration, and laughter. Abstract has allowed me to bring these passions to work every day as a culture ADD, not a culture fit.

What’s one childhood lesson that you still carry with you to this day?

God won’t give you more than you can handle. I have experienced plenty of lows personally, academically, and professionally. Instead of letting these downfalls break me, I let them be lessons that help make me a stronger person.

Tell us about where you grew up and what makes it unique.

I'm a California boy raised in Arkansas (Arkadelphia, AR to be specific. Go Badgers!) We moved down South when I was a kid, and stayed there until high school. I’m grateful for my time down south. The community was tight-knit, and everyone felt like family. That Southern hospitality will stick with me forever. I don’t miss the chitlins’, though!

What are you most proud of in your life/career?

I originally planned to answer this by stating accomplishments, but they're not what define me. There are many paths to success. The journey is the most exciting part. I’m grateful that I’ve found a passion for recruiting, and hope to continue growing. Although I’m not completely there yet, I’m proud to say that I’ve found my lane and I’m on my way.

What's your favorite hype song and why?

Jay-Z “PSA (Public Service Announcement).” Sometimes you have to remind the world who you are!

You get to have dinner with one famous person. Who do you choose and what would you ask them?

Barack Obama. He seems like such a down-to-earth guy, and I’d love to learn how he’s been able to achieve so much success while remaining so cool 😎.
